A fascinating blockbuster. Guiseppe Verdi’s choral opera Nabucco already attracted large audiences on its premiere night at today’s Teatro alla Scala in Milan on March 9, 1842. 175 years later, the opera is more topical than ever. What is the secret of the success story of the unique symbolic form and magic of Italian opera? This opera radiates a unique symbolic power. This is how Emperor Verdi saw it. Like many of his contemporaries, he wanted Italy to get rid of foreign shackles and unite, and the opera stage provided an ideal template for this. There are two intertwined storylines: on the one hand, there are stories about Jews, Israelis and Levites trying to get rid of Babylonian rule; on the other hand, the Babylonian king Nabucco declared himself a god by his daughter Abi Is and went mad.
